Wat Chedi Luang

"Luang" in Northern Thai language means "massive".  So Wat Chedi Luang simply means the temple of the great stupa, or "chide" in Thai, as you can see massive and very impressive stupa dominating the area.

This was probably the largest structure in ancient Chiang Mai.  Base of the stupa was around 80 meters each side, and the geight was around 85 meters when it was originally built.

Wat Chedi Luang or Jedi Luang was built in 1391 during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma, 8th ruler of the Mengrai dynasty. He intended the structure to house the ashes of his father, Ku Na. Appropriately, the site was designated as a 'ku luang' instead of a chedi since it was not intended to house relics of the Buddha.

Wat Chedi Luang is located on Ratchadumneon road inside the ancient wall part of the city.  Open for entry from 7am until 10pm everyday.
